Week Twenty-Seven

February 5th, 2009

Since we decided to delay solids until 6 months, with the exception of the rice cereal we started at 5 months, Madeline tasted her first veggies this week. We began with carrots, which she wasn’t all that excited about at first. But now she seems to be tolerating them more. We also started sweet peas later in the week. They are still not high on her list of favorite things. We’ve read that it can take up to 15 tastes for a child to like something. So we’re hoping that with patience, she will get her mommy’s love of veggies. She has also gotten quite good at opening her mouth for food, signaling that she is ready to eat when the spoon approaches. We’re also doing sippy cup "training," which isn’t going so well. She’s not too keen on the taste of water, highly diluted apple juice or even formula from a cup (it must taste different or something).

Madeline’s 6 Months Old!

January 27th, 2009

In some ways it feels like only yesterday that we were at the hospital for her birth and in other ways it seems like an eternity. But one thing is absolutely constant – neither of us were totally prepared for how much a baby grows and changes as each day passes. We never expected that at six months she would be sitting up unsupported, "yapping" at us, or adding her opinion with coos and sighs during our conversations.

She has quite the personality. She is an absolute joy. She is cheerful and easy going. She smiles and laughs all the time. She enjoys field trips (aka errands) and she seems to be a perfect fit to our family. We love that she smiles at people and we are often complemented on how well she behaves in a public situation. We’re very aware that she is becoming more and more active and soon she will be running through the house creating all sorts of chaos. She has Andre’s patience and Jennifer’s sense of being busy. And she’s just getting started….

Today, was Madeline’s six month check-up. The doctor said she looks good, is thriving, eating well, looks happy and is doing exactly what they expect a baby her age to be doing. He gave the go-ahead to start fruits and veggies. He also advised us to baby proof because she would be on the move soon! She weighs 19 pounds (94%), is 25.5 inches long (41%), and her head is 17.5 inches (93%).
